COP28 UAE will take place between 30 November and 12 December 2023, at Expo City, Dubai. This will be the most inclusive COP ever, with Blue and Green zones working side-by-side to deliver real, actionable solutions to the climate crisis. The Blue Zone is where the official negotiations take place, and where world leaders will speak. The Green Zone is more widely accessible and is a venue for exhibits and side events organized by youth and civil society organizations, academics, business groups, and others. COP28 aims to inspire the innovative and change-making potential of Green Zone participants, by enabling constructive dialogue, encouraging knowledge sharing, and driving a positive entrepreneurial spirit. This dynamic approach will enable all participants to tackle the climate crisis with ambitious optimism; embracing the power of partnership and collaboration to solve seemingly impossible climate challenges.
WHAT IS COP?
COP stands for Conference of the Parties, with “parties” referring to the 197 nations that agreed to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), in 1992. In the three decades since its first Summit in Rio de Janeiro (Earth Summit) in which an agreement was signed by member states to address “dangerous human interference with the climate system” and stabilize levels of greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions in the atmosphere, COP has convened member countries every year to determine responsibilities to identify and assess climate measures. The 21st session of the COP (COP21) led to the Paris Agreement, which mobilized global collective action to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels by 2100, and to act to adapt to the already existing effects of climate change.
Why is COP28 UAE important and what is its vision?
According to COP’s official website, “the world is demanding a new way, and COP28 UAE will deliver it.” Action Agenda is designed to move the world from Agreement to Action. Information on COP28’s Action Agenda can be found in the COP28 President-Designate’s Letter to Parties.
